Gone are the days of needing to narrow down hardware options to your one and only favorite. Try incorporating two or three styles into your space for a subtle touch of personalization. “This homeowner wanted a combination of knobs and cup pulls, but some cabinetry needed a more substantial handle,” says Jolynn Johnson, president of Crystal Kitchen + Bath. “To accommodate, long pulls were added to the dishwasher, trash door cabinet, and pantries. Selecting different hardware from the same collection allows the choices to blend together.”

Don’t shy away from size! If you’re deciding on hardware for your cabinets, consider supersized pulls. They add a distinct style and sophistication to any design, offering an aesthetic appeal worth exploring with your trusted professional. Take this Maple Grove kitchen’s refrigerator hardware (a classic, yet vintage oversized selection by Chirigos Designs), for example.

When it comes to hardware finishes, the options can be overwhelming. There’s nickel, bronze, brass, pewter, chrome, steel, and colored metals in satin, polished, aged, antique, and matte finishes. What’s in and what’s out changes by the decade, but in 2022, matte black and aged brass finishes seem to be snagging the win. This Tays & Co. Design Studio pub proves it.

Add layers of character when you install antique, decorative doorknobs into your small spaces. “Said a million times—and still true—hardware is the jewelry of a room,” says principal architect David Heide of David Heide Design Studio. “We love glass knobs and use them often. Contemporary or vintage, few rooms wouldn’t benefit from the fresh brightness these pieces certainly bring. There’s nothing like the feel of a beautiful pool-of-glass doorknob in your hand or the clean, crisp sparkle of a clear—or colored—cabinet knob caught in a moment of sunlight.”
