A house in Melbourne’s southeast that a couple renovated before getting married and having their son sold at auction, after six bidders drove the price well above what the owners were hoping.

Yvette Rodriguez burst into tears when the Carnegie house that she and husband William owned sold for $1.161m at auction on Saturday.

The result was an impressive $141,000 higher than the upper end of their $950,000-$1.02m asking price.

The couple bought the house at 156a Oakleigh Rd in 2018 before marrying and having a baby because it had a “very nice family feel”.

“When we saw the property, it had a dated cosmetic feel but the bones and floorplan were excellent,” Ms Rodriguez said.

Before moving in, they renovated the three-bedroom house’s kitchen and bathroom with help from her father Bill, an experienced renovator.

Major changes included adding a powder room in the laundry for when guests came over, creating more storage capability and installing a bedroom study nook.

Before Covid-19 hit Australia, they hosted a New Year’s Eve party for about 20 people to welcome 2020.

They married that year and now have a son, eight-month-old Diego.

“With a family, I’d say being in the front yard in summer and putting a blanket out and enjoying a picnic is one of our favourite pastimes,” Mr Rodriguez said.

“Sitting behind the picket fence, which is high and narrow, so it’s very private and having cheese and wine is just wonderful.”

An $850,000 bid started the auction for their home.

Ray White Carnegie agent Jin Ling said six bidders competed for the keys.

“The buyers were a family of three who live three streets down, they are currently renting and this is their first home,” Mr Ling said.

Ms Rodriguez said she was “relieved” because selling in an environment of rising interest rates was stressful, but part of her “would always miss the house”.

Another three-bedroom house in Melbourne’s southeast, 8 Burchall Crescent, Rowville, sold under the hammer on Saturday for $860,000.

Ray White Ferntree Gully agent Jack Rickard said a young couple purchased the home after three bidders took part in the auction.

Owner Joe Chila lived at the home for about 15 years before moving out and leasing it to tenants.

“I was over the moon with the result, just with everything going on with interest rates and the cost of living, I was very rapt,” Mr Chila said.
