Apparently the Amish have a tradition of giving kids a time-out…by seating them in a little dedicated chair with a built-in timekeeping device:
And at least one manufacturer, Cottage CraftWorks, makes a version without the clock. They did carry over the circular motif of the clock, with the shape now serving as a handle that's "very useful to pick it up without bending over."
For their part, Cottage Craftworks says we're the ones who call it a "time-out chair," and that the Amish refer to it as a "pouting chair."
