Based on the GT3 Touring, TopSpeed gives us some incredible new spy shots of Porsche's upcoming lightweight sports car, the 2023 Porsche 911 ST.

Porsche Heritage Design has left classic car fans and enthusiasts leaping for joy. It first two Heritage edition models essentially reinterpreted the historical exterior and interior detail into a modern Porsche package. Soon, a third Heritage Design edition model is coming – the Porsche 911 ST – and our sibling site TopSpeed just managed to take some spy shots of it.

Once Porsche makes it a reality, the 911 ST would follow the Targa 4S Heritage Edition and the manual-only Sport Classic. The still unrevealed 911 ST will take Porsche fans back to the early 1970s when the German sports car maker gave birth to the original 911 ST. The original model was essentially a race car meant to prove that Porsche can offer vehicles that can compete.

Porsche ultimately built 24 examples of the 911 ST from 1970 to 1971 – making them a very rare item. However, each 911 ST is unique – no two cars are identical. However, all 24 examples have similar characteristics. Based on the 911 coupe, they were all ultra-lightweight and feature engines more powerful than standard.

As for the Porsche 911 ST Heritage Design model, the modern iteration borrows most of its specs from the 911 (992) GT3 Touring. This Porsche model is already a lightweight model, weighing just around 3.109 lbs, according to TopSpeed. Just like with the original 911 ST, many expect Porsche to further trim the weight of the 911 ST, making it lighter by up to 132 lbs than the 911 GT3 Touring.

Power-wise, the Porsche 911 ST Heritage Design model should borrow the naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter, flat-six engine of the 911 GT3 Touring. If Porsche retains the power level of the engine -- at 502 hp of max output and 346 lb-ft of peak torque – the lightweight 911 ST should be quicker than the 911 GT3 Touring on the sprint from zero to 60 mph, as well as faster on high speeds.

Based on the spy shots, the Porsche 911 ST prototype has quite a different look from the 911 GT3 Touring. It features double-bubble roof, additional aero parts, as well as classic door handles. It seems that the carmaker is mixing the looks of the 911 GT3 Touring and 911 Sport Classic to create the design of the 911 ST.

In line with the lightweight character of the original 911 ST, the modern interpretation may employ lighter materials such as carbon fiber.
