During the launch of the all-new Virtus sedan, Volkswagen indicated that it will be starting its electric mobility journey in India with the ID.4 electric crossover. Now, staying true to its words, it looks like Volkswagen is progressing in the right direction, as a test mule of ID.4 was recently spied under trial runs on the roads of India by EVO India.

A red-coloured test mule of Volkswagen ID.4 in its top-spec GTX version was recently spied with Indian number plates, which indicates that the model is undergoing the final phases of testing in India. This test mule was riding on 20-inch alloy wheels and had a dual-tone red and black paint scheme. The other highlights of the design of the ID.4, including the wide-stretched daytime running LED at the front and tail light bar at the rear, are the same as those in the global-spec model. Like the other all-electric ID models from Volkswagen, the ID.4 has a closed front grille, sharply raked rear glass and pop-up door handles.

On the inside, the new India-spec Volkswagen ID.4 is expected to get the same interior layout and features, as the global-spec model gets currently. The cabin seen in the spy images has all-new Volkswagen design elements, such as a modern multi-functional steering wheel, a cleaner design for the dashboard and a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. The instrument console is also a full-TFT display unit, which looks different from that of the current display units in Taigun and Virtus.

The Volkswagen ID.4 for India will also get colour-coded interior trims, which are fully customizable as per the owner’s preferences. In all likelihood, the India-spec model will also get features like three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, 12-way powered front seats and ambient lighting. With its overall length close to 4.5 metres, it looks as big as other midsize SUVs in India, such as Tata Harrier and MG Hector.

The model of the Volkswagen ID.4 spied on the Indian roads is the top-spec GTX variant, which comes with an all-wheel-drive system with an electric motor each on the front and rear axles. This version comes with a 77 kWh battery pack, which claims a range of about 334-463 km. This particular variant of the Volkswagen ID.4 is also compatible with DC ultra-fast charging methods, through which you can fast charge the ID.4 in just 35 minutes. The lower rear-wheel-drive versions might also be on sale to keep the starting prices low.

The new Volkswagen ID.4 will be launched in India in limited numbers as CBU offerings, much like exclusive products from Volkswagen in the past, such as Polo GTI and T-Roc. Expect the new ID.4 to match other all-electric cars like Kia EV6, Volvo XC40, and the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5.
